Kidney Disease

Kidney disease can occur in many older cats and dogs. However, it is a multifaceted disease that can be found in younger animals and linked to congenital disease, environmental factors and other disease. Despite research and veterinarians pointing to low protein diets in kidney disease, the research is undetermined and questionable.

In early stage disease, we have found it’s the quality and easy assimilation of good protein, with low phosphorus content, that tends to be the most successful. Although, varying stages of disease, require different approaches.

A low phosphate diet, high moisture content, high omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin E content, can help support stage 1 and 2 kidney disease. Electrolyte levels, the role of B vitamins, oxygenation of kidney cells and stress support is key. In Chinese medicine (TCM), the kidneys hold anxiety and stress and may impart affect kidney health.

Like any disease, the support and outcome achieved is always based on how progressive the disease is.
